Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV

All GUM clinics in Northern Ireland offer PrEP. Contact details for GUM services for your local Trust area are available here:

PrEP stands for pre-exposure HIV prophylaxis. It is taken as a regular pill by a person to prevent getting HIV.

PrEP protects against HIV but doesn’t protect against other STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea) so even if you are on PrEP, you should still use a condom.

You may benefit from taking PrEP if:

  • you’re an HIV-negative man having condomless sex with men;
  • you have a partner (or ex-partner) with HIV who is not on HIV treatment;
  • you have condomless sex with a partner(s) and do not know their HIV status;
  • you’re a trans or non-binary person and are regularly having condomless sex;
  • you exchange sex for money, drugs, shelter or another reason;
  • you inject drugs.

This is not a definitive guide, and eligibility will be determined by clinicians. If you think you would benefit from accessing PrEP, you should attend your nearest GUM clinic for an assessment.
