Antenatal screening

All pregnant women in Northern Ireland are offered a blood test to check for:

  • hepatitis B infection;
  • HIV infection;
  • syphilis infection;
  • immunity to the rubella virus (German measles).

Only one sample of blood is needed. The test is offered to all pregnant women, normally at the first antenatal visit.
